For the past few years Kay and I heard about the
Wrangell 4th of July celebration.
How the town banns together to create a mid-America small town
experience. All of this is true, but
with an Alaskan twist.
In addition to all the small-town stuff like shutting
down main street (Front Street here) for a parade, crowning this year’s queen,
hotdog stands etc. Alaskans add a
logging show, throw smoked fish, along with candy to the kids to a local boat
race with categories such as the fastest, biggest rooster tail and slalom.
One of our 2 U.S. Senators shows up, just walking
around talking to folks. Lisa and I had a good 20-minute conversation about her
job. She not only listened, she
participated in the conversation. Wrangell is her home and her dad, Frank is
loved and respected here. He keeps his
boat “First Lady” moored at the Heritage marina, painted in blue and gold, just
like the Alaska flag.
The folks of Wrangell are friendly and helpful. You meet a kid on the street and you will get
a “Hi There or Howdy,” all the while the kid has a smile and looks you right in
the eye.
I can see why Wrangell is fast becoming the next
retirement community too.
