Sitka
Sitka is a small fishing town of 8 thousand. Fishing is the biggest industry although,
tourism is picking up. In talking to
commercial fisherman on the dock, they have stated there are more “yachties”
than ever before and arriving early in the season. As we approached Sitka there were long liners
everywhere trying to fill their holds with king salmon.
Everything is within walking distance. There are many
small restaurants, bars and cafes. The
dominant skyline is the fishing boats in the 3 marinas. While I did work on ASD, Kay explored the
museums, Russian Orthodox Church and the Raptor center.
We stay for about 3 days then departed for Kalinin Bay
and the famous “shark hole!” We spent a
week here trying to find the Chinook (King) salmon. This was the main reason we stopped in Sitka. We fished hard, 6-10 hours a day. Nothing.
No fish in sight. We decided to
go back to Sitka for a few days and replenish. On our way back we saw only 3
fishing boats. Everyone was complaining
there were no fish.
Back in Sitka Kay explored the rest of the town while
I washed and fixed a few things on the boat.
We will be here for 4 nights.
Then we will go back to Kalinin Bay for a few days and make our way back
“inside” to try for crab, shrimp, halibut and wait on the cohos (Silvers) that
start arriving the first part of August.
